Correspondence, orders, charts, instruction manuals and 2 photograph albums (ca. 1941-1945), and 24 printed flight instructional manuals and related materials re Foster's activities at Hawthorne School of Aeronautics, Orangeburg, S.C., especially during World War II. Collection documents Hawthorne's service as a flight instructor for U.S. Army Air Forces and French aviation cadets, and his activities with Caterpillar Club, an organization whose member's lives have been saved by the use of parachutes. Published items include flight manuals, government documents, etc., some dating to World War II; some illustrated with cartoons demonstrating proper and improper habits for instructors and students; includes three issues (Mar., Apr., and May, 1945) of Courrier de L'Air, a French aviation cadet journal with photos and articles re life in S.C. and elsewhere; French-English Handbook of Aeronautical Terms; and an illustrated booklet, Aircraft Dispatching and Briefing (1944).
